Good vs God…again.

I missed writing yesterday, the day passed in such a flurry of activities,  i couldn’t believe so much could happen in one day. So this is a make-up post for yesterday. Enjoy!

Last week i tried to explain how something that appears good to you may not necessarily be what God wants from you and the take home was this, “dont just do good, do God” because that’s more important.

I like being practical, and i like being taught practical ways to apply the things that I learn, what’s the point learning new stuff all the time that you never apply to life? So while we looked at the examples of Uzzah, Martha, and Jesus from the scriptures last time, i kept thinking, how can I make this more practical so that you (my dear, darling reader) can see how this applies to us today. So I’d just be sharing some true stories and I hope in the end that this makes sense and that it changes not just the way you think, but the way you live.

A friend shared this experience with me, she was in a bus going to church one cool evening, happy and expectant, she was all charged up for worship and word (this is me adding spice to the story) all was perfect and in her purse was some money she had decided to give to the Lord during service, as an obedient daughter of God, she felt happy with herself. On reaching her destination, a lady she knew tappeed her on the shoulder from the seat behind her and said “please can you spare me some money, i forgot my purse and i can’t pay the fare” my dear friend replied this way “I’m sorry o, the only money on me here is my offering and I can’t give it to you, its “God’s money” so she left the other lady to seek help elsewhere because she couldn’t imagine using out of “God’s money” to pay someone’s fare, but as she went on into the church, she felt a conviction, that she was wrong.

Yes, the money was meant to be an offering, and yes it’s good to give offerings to God, but doesn’t the very scripture teach that love for our neighbours is what proves our love for God? My friend did what she taught was good and Godly, but was it actually what God would have wanted?

This was my own experience (or a version of it). I was on my way to church one beautiful sunday (we all seem to be going to church right?), and i kind of live my life by the minute, i tend to leave home in just enough time to get to my destination in time, meaning if I’m delayed on the way for even a minute, I’d definitely be late, and it was so on this day. So walking briskly, praying on my way for a great service, i came across a well dressed lady sitting on a pavement some distance from the church sobbing, I had seen her around once or twice but i had no idea who she was, i wanted to go to her, ask what the matter was, but a look at my watch told me I’d be late if i did, and i beleived God wouldn’t be happy if i was late to service, so i shut out the sight before me and doubled my steps till i reached the church.

Comic relief 😉

Yes, i was in time, i enjoyed the service but i couldn’t shake off the feeling that i should have offered comfort to that lady, even if it meant being late, Because it’s the Godly thing to love our neighbours, there would alway be church every week, but i never got to see that lady again, my compassion could have made a change for her but I was to busy being prim and proper, being GOOD.

There are many more examples that affect different spheres of life, but I’d stop here. So what’s your story, are there times you’ve actually displeased God in trying to please him because you were busy doing the good thing? I’d be glad to hear your story, we can all learn from it. Do the God thing, that’s my motto now 😊.

I think this scripture summarises this;

Mathew 7:21-23
“Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter.
 On judgment day many will say to me, ‘Lord! Lord! We prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name.’ But I will reply, ‘I never knew you. Get away from me, you who break God’s laws.’ (emphasis added)
